The Invisible Difference

Apila Ediciones in collaboration with the High School of Design of Aragon, set the international picture book contest to promote creativity and enrich children's literature with an educational scope.

The brief required me to choose an existing story or an original tale and create illustrations in any format that pair with the text.

I created 6 double page spreads for a children's picture book 'The Invisible Difference' which was written by my mum, Michaela Daulman, over the 2020 lockdown. The story follows the unlikely friendship of a skunk named tux and a porcupine named Quill. Unlike his classmates, Quill struggles with his emotions and interactions, finding social situations difficult. However, this does not stop Tux's determination to better understand Quill with the help of his favourite teacher Miss Bubble.

The characters from left to right, Tux, Quill and Miss Bubble. I wanted the designs to have a hand-crafted simplistic look, something that could resonate with a younger audience for being able to craft for themselves.
